Ed McMahon Dies of Cancer at 86

Ed McMahon, a legend, veteran television entertainer best known as the giggle-prone sidekick to Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show" for 30 years, died early today at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 86.

Mr. McMahon's publicist, Howard Bragman, said he died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Bragman did not give a cause of death, saying that McMahon had a "multitude of health problems the last few months." but with other news reports it was cancer.

It can be recalled that Mr. McMahon, who as announcer on "The Tonight Show" and become famous when he created the catchphrases "Hey-o!" and "Heeeeeeeeere's Johnny!," made a long career on what he called his "whiskey baritone," starting as a carnival barker and road show bingo caller. He started as a salesman on the Atlantic City boardwalk before entering television during its infancy in the late 1940s.

With his talent on television hosting, he became one of the most visible personalities of the medium. He hosted the syndicated talent show "Star Search," co-hosted "TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes" with Dick Clark and appeared often with Jerry Lewis for annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethons.

My Condolences to family and friends..
